SUMMARY:AARMS CRG Annual Meeting: Dynamical Systems and Spatial Models in Ecology
DESCRIPTION:The annual meeting for the AARMS CRG on Dynamical systems and spatial models in ecology will take place on May 31\, 2018\, at the University of New Brunswick\, just prior to the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) summer meeting (June 1-4). The CRG workshop will support continued collaboration in areas related to integrodifference equations\, partial differential equations\, population dynamics and will consider specific applications to bacterial aggregation\, sea lice\, and green crab. Confirmed participants include graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows and faculty from Memorial University\, the University of New Brunswick and the University of Prince Edward Island\, as well as invited guests from other parts of Canada and beyond.

SUMMARY:26th Foundational Methods in Computer Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Foundational Methods in Computer Science is an annual workshop that brings together researchers in theoretical computer science and category theory. Past workshops have had discussions on areas such as quantum programming languages\, restriction categories\, database design\, and the differential and resource logics. They have been held at Colgate\, Dalhousie\, Kananaskis (U of Calgary)\, Mount Allison\, Ottawa\, UBC\, Spokane\, and Portland. The 2018 workshop is informal and interdisciplinary. The scientific program consists of research tutorials and contributed talks. DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) welcomes and invites session proposals for the 2018 CMS Summer Meeting in Fredericton from June 1 to 4\, 2018. Proposals should include a brief description of the focus and purpose of the session\, the expected number of speakers\, as well as the organizer’s name\, complete address\, telephone number\, e-mail address\, etc. Sessions will be advertised in the CMS Notes\, on the web site and in the AMS Notices. Speakers will be requested to submit abstracts\, which will be published on the web site and in the meeting program. SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Ergodic Theory\, Dynamical Systems\, Fractals and Applications
DESCRIPTION:We will be organizing the session ” Ergodic Theory\, Dynamical Systems\, Fractals and Applications” at 2018 CMS Summer Meeting at UNB. Dynamical systems are mathematical models of many real-world problems and they provide a useful framework for analyzing various physical\, engineering\, health science\, social and economic phenomena. Ergodic theory and Fractals play important roles for the theoretical development in discrete time dynamical systems. Invariant measures of dynamical systems reflect their longterm behaviour and play an important role in understanding their chaotic nature. The main focus and the purpose of this session is to bring researchers in dynamical systems\, ergodic theory\, fractals and related areas together and discuss the recent developments and open problems in these areas. Particular emphasis will be given researchers in the Atlantic region of Canada. Our intention is to invite emerging researchers\, post-docs and senior graduate students in Dynamical Systems\, Ergodic Theory\, Fractals and related topics.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Combinatorial Game Theory
DESCRIPTION:Placement games are a class of combinatorial games (two-player\, perfect information) that have received renewed attention recently. Well known examples are Hex\, Domineering\, and Snort. Work on placement games can be divided into two main streams – studies focusing on a specific game and those looking at properties of the entire class. The latter approach is in particular new. Placement games have connections to many other areas\, for example graph theory\, set theory\, and commutative algebra. It is often feasible to count exactly the number of legal positions in a placement game\, but this is not generally the case for combinatorial games. \nThis session at the 2018 CMS summer meeting is intended for researchers working in this area to exchange ideas and approaches; our goal is to expand the toolbox available for studying games in this class and to better understand the class itself. \nCo-organizers: Svenja Huntemann (Dalhousie University)\, Rebecca Milley (Grenfell Campus\, Memorial University of Newfoundland)

DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this CMS session is to showcase recent advances in mathematical modelling of disease-transmission in human and animal populations. The focal point for this session is the stability analysis of dynamical systems with structures relevant to disease-transmission\, including extending previous results to models for Zika virus\, cross-immunity\, and tick-borne infections. In addition to the mathematical results\, presentations will include a discussion of implications of the analysis for control and prevention of the spread of infectious diseases.

DESCRIPTION:Special Session on Algebraic Groups and Related Topics\nCMS Summer Meeting 2018\, UNB\, Fredericton\, NB \nWe view this as an opportunity to follow up on a workshop we helped organize in 2016 at Herstmonceux Castle in England. The topic at that time was algebraic combinatorics and group actions. \nThe event was co-sponsered by the Fields Institute\, the Heilbronn Institute\, the Tutte Institute and the London Mathematical Society. \nIt brought together an unusually broad collection of mathematicians who do not normally interact. We received much positive feedback on this aspect of the conference.

DESCRIPTION:Our special session on “Dynamical Systems and Spatial Models in Ecology” at the Canadian Mathematics Society meeting in Fredericton will feature 12 researchers from Atlantic Canada (including Dalhousie University\, Memorial University\, the University of New Brunswick and the University of Prince Edward Island) alongside researchers from other parts of Canada and the United States. The special session will explore recent theoretical advances and novel applications of ecological theory\, with an emphasis on integrodifference equations\, analyses to characterize threshold conditions for ecological persistence\, and the calculation of spreading speeds. With a combination of biologically and mathematically motivated talks\, the goal of this session is to inspire new applications of theory and to highlight the broad applicability and relevance of analyses at the forefront of applied mathematics.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Noncommutative Geometry and Topology
DESCRIPTION:Noncommutative geometry is a generalization of classical geometry that provides new mathematical tools for both mathematical problems and physical models by allowing for geometric spaces and spacetimes whose coordinates no longer necessarily commute. For example\, the functional-analytic approach to noncommutative geometry\, as championed most famously by Alain Connes\, has been successfully applied both to solve major problems in foliation theory and to obtain a complete mathematical model of the integer quantum Hall effect in condensed matter physics. This session aims to represent a broad cross-section of current research in noncommutative geometry and topology—the Elliott classification programme\, noncommutative index theory\, noncommutative differential and Riemannian geometry—with a particular emphasis on the work of graduate students\, postdoctoral researchers\, and early career researchers.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Categories and Topology
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this session is to bring together researchers from category theory and various branches of topology. This includes categorical aspects and approaches to homotopy theory\, such as\nQuillen Model Categories\, higher-dimensional categories and (higher) topos theory\, homotopy type theory\, as well as categorical approaches to differential geometry\, such as tangent categories. \nIn Canada\, there are several research groups involved in these lines of scientific inquiry\, several of which include researchers in Atlantic Canada\, and we believe that a CMS session would be an excellent opportunity for these researchers to learn more about each other’s methods\, and to make further strides towards the goal of better understanding the connections between the various aspects of this research. This will also be an opportunity for doctoral students in Atlantic Canada to meet other researchers working in these areas.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Partial Differential Equations and Variational Problems
DESCRIPTION:I will be organizing a special session on PDEs at the CMS Summer Meeting which is to be held at UNB\, Fredericton this June. I plan to invite several postdocs and graduate students (some are from Atlantic Canadian Universities) to give talks and participate in the session as well as as relevant sessions in the meeting. AARMS funding will help these graduate students and postdocs (several are from Atlantic universities) to cover some of the local and travel expenses. Students will be asked to apply for this funding\, if approved by AARMS. The session will host experts from Canadian and American universities (Univ. of Toronto\, UBC\, McGill\, UC Riverside…). It will bring together grad. students and professors with expertise in deterministic\, numerical and applied analysis. The talks will be in the areas of elliptic/parabolic PDE\, thin film equations and variational calculus.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Singularities and Phase transitions in Nonlinear PDEs
DESCRIPTION:The CMS session at Fredericton will focus on nonlinear problems related to the study of phase transitions in condensed matter\, and of dynamical systems arising in biological applications. The analysis of the models presented will be based on calculus of variations methods\, geometric analysis of nonlocal problems\, and dimension-reduction methods in nonlinear evolution equations. The session will provide a forum for junior scientists\, who have already shown an ability to make significant contributions to the area\, to present and discuss their most recent results. About half of the participants will be coming from the Atlantic region and represent an important part of the contribution to our session. From the Atlantic region\, the participants would be: Mohammad El Smaily (UNB Fredericton)\, Scott Rodney (Cape Breton)\, Shaohua Chen (Cape Breton)\, Holger Teismann (Acadia)\, and the others will be coming from Canada and the US so that there will be important exchange.
