SUMMARY:Mathematical Congress of the Americas 2017
DESCRIPTION:The second Mathematical Congress of the Americas (MCA) will take place on July 24-28\, 2017\, at Centre Mont-Royal and McGill University\, Montreal\, Canada. Based on the very successful experience of the first Congress\, wide participation of mathematicians and students from North America\, Central America\, South America\, and the Caribbean is expected. \nThe goals of the Mathematical Congress of the Americas are to highlight the excellence of mathematical achievements of the Americas in the international arena and to foster collaboration between the continents’ mathematical communities.

SUMMARY:CAIMS 2017 – Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chad Topaz\, Williams College \nSchools of fish\, flocks of birds\, herds of mammals\, and even colonies of bacteria all show behavior we call ‘swarming’\, but these groups are difficult to understand biologically and mathematically. I will give an overview of how social and biological interactions lead to swarming behavior. I will also discuss how mathematical modeling (describing the real world with mathematics) can be used to study locust swarms\, which are the most massive and destructive swarms on Earth. Swarming is related to many phenomena of collective behavior in nature and society\, where seemingly independent objects — like neurons\, metronomes\, and even people — start to act in the same way. This public lecture will be interactive and accessible; no technical knowledge is required.

SUMMARY:CanaDAM 2017
DESCRIPTION:The 6th biennial Canadian Discrete and Algorithmic Mathematics Conference (CanaDAM) will be held on June 12-15\, 2017 on the Toronto campus of Ryerson University. Previous CanaDAM Conferences were held at Banff in 2007\, Montréal in 2009\, Victoria in 2011 St. Johns in 2013 and Saskatchewan in 2015 \nThe general theme of the conference is the theory and application of discrete structures. Its goal is to highlight the most salient trends in the field\, which has close links to such diverse areas as cryptography\, computer science\, large-scale networks and biology. The conference will bring together researchers from the various disciplines with which discrete and algorithmic mathematics interact. \nParticular areas of interest are the following: graphs and digraphs\, hypergraphs\, matroids\, ordered sets\, designs\, coding theory\, enumeration\, combinatorics of words\, discrete optimization\, discrete and computational geometry\, lattice point enumeration\, combinatorial algorithms\, computational complexity\, and applications of discrete and algorithmic mathematics\, including (but not limited to) web graphs\, computational biology\, telecommunication networks\, and information processing.
