SUMMARY:Open quantum systems
DESCRIPTION:This course is concerned with the behaviour quantum systems under the influence of external noise. The theory describes generic noise induced features\, such as decoherence\, entanglement\, thermalization. They are of core interest in applications in various branches of science: in quantum information and computation\, chemistry\, material sciences and even in biology. Basic familiarity with this theory is a good (and necessary) foundation for a more advanced understanding of most modern quantum sciences. \nThe course will be taught by Marco Merkli (Memorial University) at the African Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Centre of Excellence in Limbe\, Cameroon. AARMS support for Atlantic Canadian participation in AIMS graduate courses is an important component of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutes in 2015.

SUMMARY:Borders in public health and mathematical epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:Most research in Mathematical Epidemiology focuses on infectious disease characteristics within local\, isolated populations and geographic regions. However\, infectious diseases are not confined to small regions. They cross borders\, affecting multiple populations\, jurisdictions\, and governments. This workshop aims to foster mathematical models of infectious diseases across borders and at the intersection of mathematics and public health. An important component of this workshop is the inclusion of infectious disease modellers that work in local\, federal\, and global health organizations. The workshop will provide an important platform for knowledge translation and discussion\, enabling the identification of the key questions in public health policy that involve borders\, and the mathematical models and methods that can be utilized to address these key questions and advance public health policy. The workshop will bring together Canadian and international mathematical epidemiologists and public health decision-makers who work at the forefront of infectious disease research.

SUMMARY:CANSSI National Case Study Competition 2019
DESCRIPTION:Judging for the Atlantic regional participants in the 2019 CANSSI National Case Study Competition will take place at UNB Fredericton on Wednesday\, October 9 from 4-7pm. \nThis datathon gives opportunities for students to undertake creative modelling in a real-world problem involving the analysis of big data. Participants in the two teams that can come up with best prediction models for delays on BC Ferries can win prizes of $300/team\, and a trip to Simon Fraser University for the national competition. Award-winning participants are also given a job interview with Statistics Canada.

SUMMARY:Symposium: The Future of Evolutionary Game Theory
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will explore the analysis and application of game theoretical models to problems in evolutionary ecology. Special emphasis is placed on the dynamics of strategy change\, as in evolutionary systems payoffs to players change the distribution of strategies in future generations and (under ecological constraints) payoff matrices may change in response.  The properties of evolutionary game-theoretic models will be discussed\, with applications to questions in eco-evolutionary dynamics\, coevolution\, sexual selection\, parental care\, and other areas. Speakers are drawn from across Canada\, the US\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Agent based Models and the mathematical equations that describe them
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will clarify the relationship between Agent Based Models (ABMs) and familiar equations from mathematical ecology. This is a hands-on workshop where participants will run and analyze computer code. Mathematical approximations to ABMs are valuable because they (1) reduce computational time to facilitate a more thorough model investigation\, (2) eliminate some complexity from the model description to yield clearer results\, and (3) reveal parallels with the existing mathematical ecology literature.  The workshop is open to all interested registrants\, with no prerequisite knowledge of coding or mathematics assumed; graduate students eager to add new tools to their mathematical toolboxes are especially welcome.

SUMMARY:Diversity in Mathematics: an undergraduate summer school for women in mathematics
DESCRIPTION:This is a multi-year\, multi-level approach to promoting diversity and inclusivity in STEM. The annual two-week program will encompass two concurrent\, partially overlapping events targeting two distinct groups: \n1. A summer school for top undergraduate women from across Canada and the northwest US\, currently specializing in mathematics or a closely related STEM field\, such as computer science\, physics and statistics. The program will expose them to the many facets of mathematical sciences as a career in an intense two week immersion. Career opportunities in academia and industry will be given equal emphasis. \n2. An interactive math camp that runs as a companion program to the undergraduate summer school. The target demographic here involves high school students in grades 10 and 11 in western Canada\, irrespective of gender\, with an aptitude for science and mathematics but exclusively from under-privileged minority groups.

SUMMARY:Minisymposium for the annual meeting of  the Society for Mathematical Biology
DESCRIPTION:Since the pioneer work of Fisher and KPP\, Wave Propagation in Biological Media  has been  widely studied in various mathematical models establishing the movement or invasion of species in heterogenous media or the spread of infectious  disease among species.   Recently\, there have been tremendous advancements in the theory of traveling wavefronts itself\, with considerable applications to competition or predation models in the biological field \nThe purpose of this minisymposium is to invite mathematical researchers with  biological  backgrounds to work together and contribute to the study of biological waves. It will serve as a platform to report new breakthroughs\, exchange research ideas and extend academic networks. New collaborations are also expected during and after the meeting. Speakers and talks are carefully selected to make the session attractive to a diverse audience. Especially\, PhD students or post-doctoral fellows are encouraged to attend this session for getting research insight in their recent study.

SUMMARY:Assessment in Mathematics Education Session as part of the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This Education session Assessment in Mathematics as part of the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer meeting will provide an opportunity for instructors to share such pedagogical knowledge as their innovative and meaningful approaches to assessment and the outcomes of these approaches\, especially in the age of ease of access to both pedagogical resources and assignment solutions online. Through discussions at the last CMS Summer meeting\, it was discovered that many undergraduate mathematics instructors struggle with assigning meaningful assessment\, given that extensive introductory level proofs\, solution manuals\, and solutions are easily available online. We hope this session will increase mathematics instructors’ assessment toolkit and open a needed discussion about this critically important part of every mathematics course.

SUMMARY:Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group Conference
DESCRIPTION:CMESG is not a typical academic conference\, for it is not organized around presentations and audiences. Instead\, it is a conference based on conferring\, bringing mathematicians and mathematics educators into conversation on topics of importance to the CMES community. Its main feature is the working group. Each working group will meet for three full mornings to interact around a particular topic. There are two plenary speaker sessions which will each address the whole conference. Two other types of sessions provide more traditional forms of presentation: invited topic sessions and the new PhD sessions. There is also a gallery walk intended to provide a forum for members to contribute to our meeting and in doing so enhance our awareness of each other’s work. SUMMARY:CanaDAM 2019
DESCRIPTION:The CanaDAM conference series is devoted to all aspects of discrete and algorithmic mathematics. A meeting has been held in each odd-numbered year since 2007. The intent of these conferences is to provide a strong conference to fill the years in which the SIAM conference in Discrete Mathematics does not take place\, and to showcase Canadian research in this area of mathematics. The conference enjoys representation and plenary talks on a wide variety of topics in discrete and algorithmic mathematics\, a public lecture\, and strong participation from graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

SUMMARY:PIMS Workshop on Mathematical Sciences and Clean Energy Applications
DESCRIPTION:To avoid the worst consequences of climate change\, the energy chain of the global economy must be drastically decarbonized. This exploratory workshop will build a greater dialogue between those in the mathematical sciences and the clean energy sector. The workshop will include: first-hand accounts of mathematical scientists working in clean energy projects\, kind and gentle introductions to clean energy systems and mathematical tools\, graduate student presentations\, and panel discussions on topics such as challenges in clean energy. The goal of the workshop is to inspire interest in further exploration and to nucleate collaborations between mathematical scientists and practitioners in clean energy. Mathematical scientists with no previous experience in clean energy research are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Data Science Practitioners East (DSPE) is a group of Canadian East Coast practicing data scientists\, researchers and supporting organizations driven to expand their capabilities in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.  Their membership includes academics\, industry representatives\, and government workers. \nAARMS is assisting in connecting this network with mathematical scientist throughout Atlantic Canada with interests in Data Science\, broadly defined. \nDSPE meetups are informal gatherings where all are welcome to discuss interesting machine learning and data problems. \nDuring the meetup on April 25\, the application of machine learning to the problem of predicting the success of a start-up company will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:The CIAA conference series was started in 1996 as the Workshop on Implementation and Application of Automata\, in London\, Ontario\, Canada\, and became Conference on Implementation and Application of Automata four years later\, in 2000\, when was celebrated half century of automata theory during HCAT 2000\, in London\, Ontario\, Canada. The conference brings together researchers from both computing theory and practice\, and the contributions to this conference cover all practical and theoretical aspects in automata theory and related structures. Topics of interest include but is not limited to automata implementations and applications in areas like software\, mathematics\, programming\, DNA or other bio-inspired computations\, and others. \nA more inclusive list is on the general CIAA Conference website (http://www.informatik.uni-giessen.de/ciaa/ciaa_welcome.html). We must emphasize that the area of the conference includes both classical and non-classical automata theory. The conference is traditionally held every year alternatively in Europe or North America.

DESCRIPTION:DCFS\, the International Workshop on Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems is an annual academic conference in the field of theoretical computer science. Beginning with the 2011 edition\, the proceedings of the workshop appear in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Already since the very beginning\, extended versions of selected papers are published as special issues of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science\, the Journal of Automata\, Languages and Combinatorics\, Theoretical Computer Science\, and Information and Computation. \nThis year’s DCFS will be the 20th in the series. Topics of interest include: automata\, grammars\, succinctness of description of objects\, circuit complexity\, Kolmogorov complexity\, frontiers between decidability and undecidability\, nature-motivated (bio-inspired) architectures and unconventional models of computing.

SUMMARY:Canadian Undergraduate Math Conference 2018
DESCRIPTION:The CUMC is a national mathematics conference designed to introduce research topics and skills to undergraduates. Students are encouraged to present their mathematical topic of interest in a relaxed and friendly environment\, and are at the same time exposed to areas of mathematics that they may not have seen before. By placing an emphasis on bilingualism\, regional diversity\, and non-competitiveness\, the CUMC motivates young researchers to further their knowledge and continue in their pursuit of mathematics. The CUMC provides an opportunity for undergraduates to meet and share ideas with their peers from across the country and gives an introduction to the research process and to new and exciting topics in mathematics. Presentations by established keynotes will give attendees a glimpse into mathematics as it is practiced in both academia and industry\, while those by emerging young researchers will motivate undergraduates to explore for themselves mathematics beyond the curriculum.

SUMMARY:18th International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and Applications
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the conference is to bring together people from all branches of mathematics and\, to a lesser extent\, from other sciences with interests in recurrence sequences\, their applications and generalizations\, and other special sequences of numbers and functions. Since 1984\, these biennial conferences have alternated between both sides of the Atlantic\, and this year it is hosted in Canada for the first time. \nThe Fibonacci Conference series is unusual among mathematics conferences in that there are no invited talks\, and every participant\, from student to senior researcher\, will get the same amount of time for their talks (typically 20 minutes). The only exception is the “Lucas Lecture”\, a public talk which this year will be delivered Hugh C. DESCRIPTION:The Theory Canada conference is organized annually immediately ahead of the meeting of the Canadian Association of Physics. This year\, TC13 will be held at St-Francis Xavier University as a satellite to the CAP meeting hosted by Dalhousie University. Once again Theory Canada will bring together professional researchers from across the country to exchange ideas on broad themes in theoretical and mathematical physics: (i) Condensed Matter Theory (ii) Mathematical Physics (iii) Particles and Fields (iv) Quantum Information (v) Relativity\, Gravitation and Cosmology\, (vi) Strings and Quantum Gravity. \nEach session has two invited 30-minute talks and up to five contributed 20-minute talks. SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Singularities and Phase transitions in Nonlinear PDEs
DESCRIPTION:The CMS session at Fredericton will focus on nonlinear problems related to the study of phase transitions in condensed matter\, and of dynamical systems arising in biological applications. The analysis of the models presented will be based on calculus of variations methods\, geometric analysis of nonlocal problems\, and dimension-reduction methods in nonlinear evolution equations. The session will provide a forum for junior scientists\, who have already shown an ability to make significant contributions to the area\, to present and discuss their most recent results. About half of the participants will be coming from the Atlantic region and represent an important part of the contribution to our session. From the Atlantic region\, the participants would be: Mohammad El Smaily (UNB Fredericton)\, Scott Rodney (Cape Breton)\, Shaohua Chen (Cape Breton)\, Holger Teismann (Acadia)\, and the others will be coming from Canada and the US so that there will be important exchange.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Partial Differential Equations and Variational Problems
DESCRIPTION:I will be organizing a special session on PDEs at the CMS Summer Meeting which is to be held at UNB\, Fredericton this June. I plan to invite several postdocs and graduate students (some are from Atlantic Canadian Universities) to give talks and participate in the session as well as as relevant sessions in the meeting. AARMS funding will help these graduate students and postdocs (several are from Atlantic universities) to cover some of the local and travel expenses. Students will be asked to apply for this funding\, if approved by AARMS. The session will host experts from Canadian and American universities (Univ. of Toronto\, UBC\, McGill\, UC Riverside…). It will bring together grad. students and professors with expertise in deterministic\, numerical and applied analysis. The talks will be in the areas of elliptic/parabolic PDE\, thin film equations and variational calculus.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Categories and Topology
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this session is to bring together researchers from category theory and various branches of topology. This includes categorical aspects and approaches to homotopy theory\, such as\nQuillen Model Categories\, higher-dimensional categories and (higher) topos theory\, homotopy type theory\, as well as categorical approaches to differential geometry\, such as tangent categories. \nIn Canada\, there are several research groups involved in these lines of scientific inquiry\, several of which include researchers in Atlantic Canada\, and we believe that a CMS session would be an excellent opportunity for these researchers to learn more about each other’s methods\, and to make further strides towards the goal of better understanding the connections between the various aspects of this research. This will also be an opportunity for doctoral students in Atlantic Canada to meet other researchers working in these areas.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Noncommutative Geometry and Topology
DESCRIPTION:Noncommutative geometry is a generalization of classical geometry that provides new mathematical tools for both mathematical problems and physical models by allowing for geometric spaces and spacetimes whose coordinates no longer necessarily commute. For example\, the functional-analytic approach to noncommutative geometry\, as championed most famously by Alain Connes\, has been successfully applied both to solve major problems in foliation theory and to obtain a complete mathematical model of the integer quantum Hall effect in condensed matter physics. This session aims to represent a broad cross-section of current research in noncommutative geometry and topology—the Elliott classification programme\, noncommutative index theory\, noncommutative differential and Riemannian geometry—with a particular emphasis on the work of graduate students\, postdoctoral researchers\, and early career researchers.

SUMMARY:CMS Special Session: Dynamical systems and spatial models in ecology
DESCRIPTION:Our special session on “Dynamical Systems and Spatial Models in Ecology” at the Canadian Mathematics Society meeting in Fredericton will feature 12 researchers from Atlantic Canada (including Dalhousie University\, Memorial University\, the University of New Brunswick and the University of Prince Edward Island) alongside researchers from other parts of Canada and the United States. The special session will explore recent theoretical advances and novel applications of ecological theory\, with an emphasis on integrodifference equations\, analyses to characterize threshold conditions for ecological persistence\, and the calculation of spreading speeds. With a combination of biologically and mathematically motivated talks\, the goal of this session is to inspire new applications of theory and to highlight the broad applicability and relevance of analyses at the forefront of applied mathematics.
