SUMMARY:Junior Math and Computer Science Camp
DESCRIPTION:This week-long day camp is an opportunity for students entering grades 5 or 6 in the Annapolis Valley to participate in fun and enriching science-based activities with Acadia faculty and students to develop their curiosity and enjoyment of math and computer science. It represents an important piece of a multi-year plan to develop the science skills of young students in the Annapolis Valley by bringing young students into the Acadia University outreach program. This will begin the process of positively engaging students with math and computer science at a critical time in their education. Bursaries are provided for those who qualify for financial assistance.

SUMMARY:StFX Integration Challenge 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Integration Challenge is a competition for solving integrals. Two participants compete head-to-head on an integration question\, with the first correct response declared the winner of the round; the opponent is knocked out. With each successive round\, the competitors are narrowed down by a factor of 2 until only two remain (plus one consolation round to determine 3rd and 4th place). The event is designed to encourage increased engagement in first-year calculus\, and also to provide an avenue to promote math as a major\, and also career opportunities.

SUMMARY:The Ken Ireland Public Lecture: What is a Smart Village?
DESCRIPTION:What is a smart village?\nUsing mathematics for rural prosperity \nV. Kumar Murty (University of Toronto) \nWe conceive of a smart community as one in which static social inequality is minimized. Modelling this mathematically and translating it into a development strategy is one of the big global challenges of our time. When implemented\, it will affect 3 billion people\, or about half the world’s population. \nAbout the speaker: Kumar Murty received his BSc from Carleton University and his PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University. He has been a faculty member at the University of Toronto since 1987. His research is in the fields of number theory\, algebraic geometry and their applications to Information Technology. He has published more than 100 papers and 8 books in these areas. He holds two patents and has been involved with a number of startups. His research has been recognized with the prestigious Steacie Fellowship and election to the Royal Society of Canada. During the last nine years\, Kumar served as the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and helped create the Centre for Applied Mathematics\, to drive mathematical innovation. This year he was awarded the Connaught Global Challenge Award (together with Mariana Prado of the Faculty of Law and Joseph Wong of the Munk School) to study a scalable architecture for smart villages. \nAbout the Ireland Lecture:  Hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Fredericton\, the Kenneth Ireland Memorial Lecture Series honours the late Dr Kenneth F Ireland\, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics. Dr Ireland is fondly remembered as a great colleague\, a fine writer\, and a skilled musician\, with a profound interest in the history of mathematics; his graduate-level textbook on number theory\, written with Dr Michael Rosen at Brown University\, remains an internationally highly-regarded standard text.

SUMMARY:StFX Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:The camp is  scheduled for May 18-20\, 2018 and will be residential in nature. The camp is planned for 28 students in grade 10 and 11 and 3 university students who will serve as chaperones. Invitations will be sent to high schools in Nova Scotia for nominations of maximum per school of two students. The students will be expected to be academically strong and enthusiastic\, with strong aptitude for mathematics. In addition to the criteria listed above\, selection of the participants is mostly on a first come-first served basis. However\, gender and regional balance\, recommendation letters and grades will also be considered. The camp will be a two and half days weekend camp to begin at 9:00 am on the Friday and end by 11:30 am on Sunday. There will be about seven sessions that will be presented by faculty to expose the participants to exciting topics and applications in the mathematical sciences. In addition there will be several sessions on math trivia\, math relays\, and team problem solving to help inspire the participants about the breadth and applicability of the mathematical sciences. It is anticipated that students who attend the camps will develop “new friends\, new ideas\, and a new outlook on mathematics” (http://cms.math.ca/MathCamps/).

SUMMARY:Blundon Seminar Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Blundon Seminar is an annual (since 1982) three-day math camp for senior high school students from Newfoundland who are interested in mathematics and demonstrate consistently good performance in mathematics competitions such as Blundon\, COMC\, Euclid\, Fermat\, and Cayley contests. Each year we invite about 35-50 students. During the seminar the students attend two one-hour talks given by professors from MUN on various mathematical topics and applications in science and engineering. There are several problem solving sessions as well as other activities such as Mathletics and Papers Chase. The winner of Blundon Contest is presented with the Blundon Shield\, and the winners of other contests are also presented with money and book prizes at the banquet. According to students’ responses collected after each camp this event is enjoyable\, informative\, and memorable for the majority of them.

SUMMARY:CMS/UPEI Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:UPEI Math Camp is held in early May each year\, bringing together some of PEI’s top high school students for a weekend of mathematically-oriented education and entertainment. Students participate in group problem solving\, math relays\, math trivia\, a career information session\, and sessions with faculty. Hopefully\, students leave with a broader view of mathematics\, in both its intrinsic beauty and its practical utility\, and with motivation to continue their math studies in the future.

SUMMARY:NB Math League
DESCRIPTION:We will seek to bring the best and brightest math minds from New Brunswick to UNB.This competition is open to high school students from grades 9-12. Each team will consist of 4 participants. Each team will be labeled as Junior (grades 9-10) or Senior (grades 10-11) categories. In the case that a team has a mixture of grades from 9-12\, they will automatically be considered in the category of the most senior member (i.e. a team with three Grade 9 participants and one Grade 12 participant will compete in the Senior category).

SUMMARY:CAIMS 2017 – Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chad Topaz\, Williams College \nSchools of fish\, flocks of birds\, herds of mammals\, and even colonies of bacteria all show behavior we call ‘swarming’\, but these groups are difficult to understand biologically and mathematically. I will give an overview of how social and biological interactions lead to swarming behavior. I will also discuss how mathematical modeling (describing the real world with mathematics) can be used to study locust swarms\, which are the most massive and destructive swarms on Earth. Swarming is related to many phenomena of collective behavior in nature and society\, where seemingly independent objects — like neurons\, metronomes\, and even people — start to act in the same way. This public lecture will be interactive and accessible; no technical knowledge is required.
