SUMMARY:AARMS-CMS-Dal math camp for high school students
DESCRIPTION:During the second (or third) week of July\, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University hosts the annual math camp for high school students\, whose goals were to identify\, stimulate and encourage mathematical talent among Nova Scotia high school students. To select the participants we sent invitations to all of the schools in the province asking to nominate two best students from each school\, then we have selected 20 best students from this pool of qualified nominees\, based on the letters of recommendations from their respective math teachers\, math competitions scores and results\, as well as their school grades. The camp is jointly sponsored by Dalhousie University\, the Canadian Mathematical Society and AARMS. It consisted of lectures and problem-solving sessions conducted by faculty members and graduate students from Dalhousie\, Mount Saint Vincent and Acadia Universities and also included extracurricular activities. SUMMARY:AARMS Summer School 2019: Dynamical Systems\, DEs\, and Special Functions
DESCRIPTION:The summer school is intended for graduate students and promising undergraduate students from all parts of the world. Each participant is expected to register for at least two of the four courses. \nThese courses are certified to be graduate level courses by both the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (SMCS) at University of Prince Edward Island and by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS). Upon successful completion of a course\, SMCS and AARMS will award a certificate confirming this\, which students can then take back to their home institutions if they plan to receive credit for these courses towards their degree. Students hoping to receive academic credit for summer school courses are strongly encouraged to consult with their home institution about this process before the school begins. \nFor student attendees\, the AARMS Summer School will pay the tuition and the accommodation expenses\, but will not cover the cost of travel. Note that the accommodation is provided only when a student is taking a course (the night before the first lecture of a course is covered). If a student arrives early or leaves late\, the extra accommodation is not covered. Note that those who will finish their bachelor/master degree in the spring/summer term of 2019 and will enter the graduate school in the fall term of 2019 are considered to be students. \nTo apply for AARMS Summer School 2019\, please complete the online application form before April 15\, 2019. \nPlease note that the evaluation committee of the summer school will review all applications shortly after April 15\, 2019 and thereafter notify the applicants whose applications are approved by email. SUMMARY:Assessment in Mathematics Education Session as part of the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This Education session Assessment in Mathematics as part of the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer meeting will provide an opportunity for instructors to share such pedagogical knowledge as their innovative and meaningful approaches to assessment and the outcomes of these approaches\, especially in the age of ease of access to both pedagogical resources and assignment solutions online. Through discussions at the last CMS Summer meeting\, it was discovered that many undergraduate mathematics instructors struggle with assigning meaningful assessment\, given that extensive introductory level proofs\, solution manuals\, and solutions are easily available online. We hope this session will increase mathematics instructors’ assessment toolkit and open a needed discussion about this critically important part of every mathematics course.

SUMMARY:Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group Conference
DESCRIPTION:CMESG is not a typical academic conference\, for it is not organized around presentations and audiences. Instead\, it is a conference based on conferring\, bringing mathematicians and mathematics educators into conversation on topics of importance to the CMES community. Its main feature is the working group. Each working group will meet for three full mornings to interact around a particular topic. There are two plenary speaker sessions which will each address the whole conference. Two other types of sessions provide more traditional forms of presentation: invited topic sessions and the new PhD sessions. There is also a gallery walk intended to provide a forum for members to contribute to our meeting and in doing so enhance our awareness of each other’s work. SUMMARY:CanaDAM 2019
DESCRIPTION:The CanaDAM conference series is devoted to all aspects of discrete and algorithmic mathematics. A meeting has been held in each odd-numbered year since 2007. The intent of these conferences is to provide a strong conference to fill the years in which the SIAM conference in Discrete Mathematics does not take place\, and to showcase Canadian research in this area of mathematics. The conference enjoys representation and plenary talks on a wide variety of topics in discrete and algorithmic mathematics\, a public lecture\, and strong participation from graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

SUMMARY:Atlantic General Relativity Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The annual Atlantic General Relativity Conference (AGR) will be held at the University of New Brunswick on May 27-31\, 2019. The Atlantic General Relativity Conference series of meetings has been a regular and annual feature of the Atlantic GR community for nearly three decades. This series of meetings focusses on recent developments in all aspects of classical and quantum gravity. \nThe meeting will be split into a 3-day workshop and a 2-day conference. During the workshop\, experts will give introductions to different subtopics in general relativity and quantum gravity for graduate students\, and during the conference anyone who wishes to present their research will be given the opportunity to speak. Contributed talks are particularly aimed at ensuring that Atlantic Canadian graduate students build experience speaking at conferences.

SUMMARY:Calculus Instruction in Atlantic Canada Symposium 2019
DESCRIPTION:Calculus Instruction in Atlantic Canada Symposium 2019 will have the theme of Bridging the Gap: High School and University Mathematics. It will be held at MSVU on May 24-25\, 2019 and Atlantic Canadian high school educators\, as well as university educators will be invited. The goal of this symposium is to give participants the opportunity to hear from experts and engage in discussions regarding misconceptions between what math skills students have leaving high school and what math skills universities assume they have. The structure of the symposium will include plenary talks and a panel of university and high school educators. There will be small group discussions\, as well as contributed talks.

SUMMARY:PIMS Workshop on Mathematical Sciences and Clean Energy Applications
DESCRIPTION:To avoid the worst consequences of climate change\, the energy chain of the global economy must be drastically decarbonized. This exploratory workshop will build a greater dialogue between those in the mathematical sciences and the clean energy sector. The workshop will include: first-hand accounts of mathematical scientists working in clean energy projects\, kind and gentle introductions to clean energy systems and mathematical tools\, graduate student presentations\, and panel discussions on topics such as challenges in clean energy. The goal of the workshop is to inspire interest in further exploration and to nucleate collaborations between mathematical scientists and practitioners in clean energy. Mathematical scientists with no previous experience in clean energy research are welcome.

SUMMARY:STFX Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:The StFX-AARMS-CMS Math Camps are two and half days camp which begins at 9:00 am on a Friday and end by 11:30 am on Sunday. There are several presentations by professors to expose the participants to exciting topics and applications in the mathematical sciences. In addition there are several sessions on math trivia\, math relays\, and team problem solving to help inspire the participants about the breadth and applicability of the mathematical sciences. It is anticipated that students who attend the camps will develop new friends\, new ideas\, and a new outlook on mathematics.

SUMMARY:Blundon Seminar Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:The Blundon Seminar is an annual (since 1982) three-day math camp for senior high school students from Newfoundland who are interested in mathematics and demonstrate consistently good performance in mathematics competitions. Participation in the math camp is by invitation only based on the results of preceding Blundon\, COMC\, Euclid\, Fermat\, and Cayley contests.  During the seminar the students attend two one-hour talks given by professors from MUN on various mathematical topics and applications in science and engineering. There are several problem solving sessions as well as other activities such as Mathletics and Papers Chase. The winner of Blundon Contest is presented with the Blundon Shield\, and the winners of other contests are also presented with money and book prizes. The awards for the best results in mathematics competitions are presented during the banquet\, where a collective photo is taken as well.

SUMMARY:New Brunswick Mathematics Competition
DESCRIPTION:The New Brunswick mathematics competition is held in May every year for grade 7\, 8 and 9 students from across the province.  This mathematics competition is jointly organized by the University of New Brunswick and the Université de Moncton\, and the participating students write the mathematics contest at one of the University of New Brunswick or Université de Moncton campuses. \nThe competition is held in the morning\, and in the afternoon the students go to a number of talks and demonstrations that learn about a number of interesting applications of mathematics to the real world.

SUMMARY:2019 CMS - UPEI - AARMS Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:The School of Mathematical and Computational Science (SMCS) is once again organizing the UPEI-CMS-AARMS Regional Math Camp\, to be held here on campus at UPEI May 3 – May 5\, 2019. We anticipate hosting some of the most talented grade 10 and grade 11 math students from across the Island. This year\, we expect to invite 25-30 students. We offer students an opportunity to participate in challenging\, intellectual activities with their peers\, guided by the UPEI SMCS faculties.  This students will arrive on the UPEI campus by 9:00 am on Friday (May 3)\, spend 2 nights in residence\, and depart at noon on Sunday (May 5). With the help of several undergraduate math majors\, faculty members will\nconduct several educational\, problem-solving and career sessions during the daytime\, and recreational sessions during the evenings. The students will be chaperoned at all times\nthroughout the weekend.

DESCRIPTION:Data Science Practitioners East (DSPE) is a group of Canadian East Coast practicing data scientists\, researchers and supporting organizations driven to expand their capabilities in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.  Their membership includes academics\, industry representatives\, and government workers. \nAARMS is assisting in connecting this network with mathematical scientist throughout Atlantic Canada with interests in Data Science\, broadly defined. \nDSPE meetups are informal gatherings where all are welcome to discuss interesting machine learning and data problems. \nDuring the meetup on April 25\, the application of machine learning to the problem of predicting the success of a start-up company will be discussed.

SUMMARY:New Brunswick Math League
DESCRIPTION:The third annual New Brunswick Math League is an all-day high school mathematics competition hosted by the UNB Math Society at the University of New Brunswick. On April 5th\, students from high schools across the province will participate\, in groups of 4\, in three rounds of competition: the pairs relay\, the individual relay\, and the team event. Teams can either enter in the junior or senior category based on their age group\, however the contest papers are identical for both. In partnership with the Nova Scotia Math League\, the questions and competition will be provided by them. The purpose of the event is to engage young students in a challenging yet enjoyable day that allows them to improve their competition math abilities while having fun with their peers. The winning teams will be given medals for their efforts and all students will be provided with snacks and lunch.

DESCRIPTION:Girls STEM Up is the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada\, focused on empowering the next generation of female leaders in the fields of science\, technology\, math\, and engineering.The conference will be a stimulating day that will connect  current and future women paving the way in the STEM industries of Atlantic Canada. Our speakers will include current women in the STEM fields that will focus on enlightening young women about the power of their voice and how they can be change makers in their desired fields. Introducing them to the wide scope of opportunities in STEM will allow them to be confident in their abilities and not be afraid to branch out from the status quo.

SUMMARY:StFX Integration Challenge 2019
DESCRIPTION:The Integration Challenge is a competition for solving integrals. Two participants compete head-to-head on an integration question\, with the first correct response declared the winner of the round; the opponent is knocked out. With each successive round\, the competitors are narrowed down by a factor of 2 until only two remain (plus one consolation round to determine 3rd and 4th place). The event is designed to encourage increased engagement in first-year calculus\, and also to provide an avenue to promote math as a major\, and also career opportunities.

SUMMARY:Integration Challenge at StFX
DESCRIPTION:The integration challenge\, modelled on an annual version at MIT\, is a one-night event where first-year calculus students sign up to compete head-to-head solving integrals. The competition will run like a tournament in single-knockout format\, and integration problems increase in difficulty through each round. Information about mathematics as a choice of major\, and research opportunities are also planned at the event. Prizes and certificates are awarded to the top 3 finishers.

SUMMARY:Mini-course "Representations of simple finite dimensional and affine Lie algebras"
DESCRIPTION:This mini-course will focus on Representation Theory of simple complex finite dimensional and affine Lie algebras. We will start with the introduction to the theory of infinite dimensional weight representations. Though the classification of irreducible representations is still open beyond the sl(2) case in general\, in some subcategories this problem can be managed successfully. In particular\, we will discuss the theory of Gelfand-Tsetlin modules and their generalizations in the finite dimensional case. A comparison will be given with the representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. We will conclude with the construction of free field realizations of these algebras and discuss open problems.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s annual Outreach Meeting will take place on Saturday\, October 20 from 10:00-14:30 at the Learning Center of Dalhousie Mathematics and Statistics Department\, located at the first floor of the Chase Building at the main Dalhousie campus.  As in previous years\, the goal of the meeting is to assemble university faculty\, postdocs\, graduate students and preschool-Grade 12 teachers who have an interest in mathematical outreach activities.  Participants will get a chance to let each other know about what kind of outreach they have attempted in the past\, and what they hope to accomplish in the future.

DESCRIPTION:The annual Science Atlantic\, Mathematics\, Statistics\, and Computer Science Conference\, will be hosted by Université de Moncton (UdeM) on October 12-13\, 2018. SUMMARY:The Ken Ireland Public Lecture: What is a Smart Village?
DESCRIPTION:What is a smart village?\nUsing mathematics for rural prosperity \nV. Kumar Murty (University of Toronto) \nWe conceive of a smart community as one in which static social inequality is minimized. Modelling this mathematically and translating it into a development strategy is one of the big global challenges of our time. When implemented\, it will affect 3 billion people\, or about half the world’s population. \nAbout the speaker: Kumar Murty received his BSc from Carleton University and his PhD in Mathematics from Harvard University. He has been a faculty member at the University of Toronto since 1987. His research is in the fields of number theory\, algebraic geometry and their applications to Information Technology. He has published more than 100 papers and 8 books in these areas. He holds two patents and has been involved with a number of startups. His research has been recognized with the prestigious Steacie Fellowship and election to the Royal Society of Canada. During the last nine years\, Kumar served as the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and helped create the Centre for Applied Mathematics\, to drive mathematical innovation. This year he was awarded the Connaught Global Challenge Award (together with Mariana Prado of the Faculty of Law and Joseph Wong of the Munk School) to study a scalable architecture for smart villages. \nAbout the Ireland Lecture:  Hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Fredericton\, the Kenneth Ireland Memorial Lecture Series honours the late Dr Kenneth F Ireland\, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics. Dr Ireland is fondly remembered as a great colleague\, a fine writer\, and a skilled musician\, with a profound interest in the history of mathematics; his graduate-level textbook on number theory\, written with Dr Michael Rosen at Brown University\, remains an internationally highly-regarded standard text.

SUMMARY:AAC minicourse by Professor Matej Bresar
DESCRIPTION:During the week of September 9 to September 15\, 2018\, Atlantic Algebra Centre organizes a mini course “Functional Identities and Zero Product Determined Algebras” by Prof. Matej Bresar. Functional identities are an important combinatorial tool applicable to problems in noncommutative and nonassociative algebra\, linear algebra\, and operator theory. They have been used in an essential way for the solution of the well-known Herstein’s Lie map conjectures\, which remained open for three decades. Matej Brešar was one of the authors of the solution. Dr Brešar is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Maribor. He gave plenary talks at a number of conferences and workshops\, including some organized by Atlantic Algebra Centre. He has published over 150 research papers\, is a co-author of the books “Functional Identities” (Birkhäuser\, 2007) and “Introduction to Noncommutative Algebra” (Springer\, 2014). Member of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

SUMMARY:Diversity in Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:We propose a multi-year\, multi-level approach to promoting diversity and inclusivity in STEM. The annual two-week program will include a summer school for top undergraduate women from across Canada and the northwest United States\, currently specializing in mathematics or a closely related STEM field\, such as computer science\, physics and statistics. The program will show them the many possibilities of math and science as a career\, and encourage them to consider graduate studies\, an arena where women are seriously under-represented. The program will expose them to the many facets of mathematical sciences as a career in an intense two week immersion. Career opportunities in academia and industry will be given equal emphasis. We hope to encourage these gifted young women to continue on to graduate school\, an arena where women are seriously under-represented.

SUMMARY:23rd International Conference on Implementation and Applications of Automata (CIAA)
DESCRIPTION:The CIAA conference series was started in 1996 as the Workshop on Implementation and Application of Automata\, in London\, Ontario\, Canada\, and became Conference on Implementation and Application of Automata four years later\, in 2000\, when was celebrated half century of automata theory during HCAT 2000\, in London\, Ontario\, Canada. The conference brings together researchers from both computing theory and practice\, and the contributions to this conference cover all practical and theoretical aspects in automata theory and related structures. Topics of interest include but is not limited to automata implementations and applications in areas like software\, mathematics\, programming\, DNA or other bio-inspired computations\, and others. \nA more inclusive list is on the general CIAA Conference website (http://www.informatik.uni-giessen.de/ciaa/ciaa_welcome.html). We must emphasize that the area of the conference includes both classical and non-classical automata theory. The conference is traditionally held every year alternatively in Europe or North America.

SUMMARY:20th International Conference on Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems (DCFS)
DESCRIPTION:DCFS\, the International Workshop on Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems is an annual academic conference in the field of theoretical computer science. Beginning with the 2011 edition\, the proceedings of the workshop appear in the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Already since the very beginning\, extended versions of selected papers are published as special issues of the International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science\, the Journal of Automata\, Languages and Combinatorics\, Theoretical Computer Science\, and Information and Computation. \nThis year’s DCFS will be the 20th in the series. Topics of interest include: automata\, grammars\, succinctness of description of objects\, circuit complexity\, Kolmogorov complexity\, frontiers between decidability and undecidability\, nature-motivated (bio-inspired) architectures and unconventional models of computing.
