DESCRIPTION:We invite you to participate in the 11th Americas Conference on Differential Equations and Nonlinear Analysis (Americas XI) at the University of Alberta in Edmonton\, from August 12-19\, 2017. \nThe XI Americas Conference brings together mathematicians from throughout the Americas to share their recent research findings\, to assess recent research developments\, to identify new research directions\, and to strengthen existing and foster new collaborations in the broad field of differential equations and nonlinear analysis. \nThe Americas Conference on Differential Equations and Nonlinear Analysis (Americas Conference) was initiated in 1994 to facilitate collaboration among researchers from Latin America\, USA and Canada in this area of Mathematics. The first meeting took place in Taxco\, Mexico\, in 1994 with the participation of 25 lecturers from the USA\, Brazil\, Mexico and Venezuela. Since then\, meetings have taken place on a regular basis: Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, in 1996; Atlanta\, USA\, in 1998; Merida\, Venezuela\, in 2000; Edmonton\, Canada in 2002\, Santiago\, Chile\, in 2005; Cartagena\, Colombia in 2007; Veracruz\, Mexico\, in 2009; Trujillo\, Peru\, in 2012; and Buenos Aires\, Argentina in 2015. \nThis conference series is a well-established forum for mathematics with applications ranging from natural and social sciences to engineering. From its inception\, the conference has striven to promote collaborative scientific networks\, to emphasize high standards of research\, and to welcome young mathematicians from the Americas into the broader scientific community.

SUMMARY:CAIMS 2017 – Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chad Topaz\, Williams College \nSchools of fish\, flocks of birds\, herds of mammals\, and even colonies of bacteria all show behavior we call ‘swarming’\, but these groups are difficult to understand biologically and mathematically. I will give an overview of how social and biological interactions lead to swarming behavior. I will also discuss how mathematical modeling (describing the real world with mathematics) can be used to study locust swarms\, which are the most massive and destructive swarms on Earth. Swarming is related to many phenomena of collective behavior in nature and society\, where seemingly independent objects — like neurons\, metronomes\, and even people — start to act in the same way. This public lecture will be interactive and accessible; no technical knowledge is required.

SUMMARY:AARMS Summer School 2017
DESCRIPTION:During a four week period every summer AARMS invites highly regarded faculty from around the world to deliver graduate courses in the mathematical sciences and their applications. Our goals are to broaden the education of graduate students and to encourage promising undergraduates to continue their study. While\, in a given year\, a good number of students come from Canada\, our School continues to bring to Atlantic Canada students from around the world. Indeed\, the multicultural\, international flavour of our School and the possibility of forming lifelong friendships and collaborations amongst people of different backgrounds and cultures is one of our School’s strengths. \nThis year’s summer school will be held on the beautiful province of Prince Edward Island.  The focus on Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science is both topical and fascinating. This is the first summer school held by the University of Prince Edward Island\, and the local organizers have ensured that it will be an academically valuable and personally memorable experience for both the students and guest lecturers.

SUMMARY:Blundon Seminar Camp at Memorial
DESCRIPTION:The Blundon seminar is our annual three-day event for senior high school students who are interested in mathematics and demonstrate consistently good performance in mathematics competitions. Participation in the seminar is by invitation only based on the results of preceding Blundon\, Euclid\, Fermat\,and Cayley contests. Each year we have about 35-50 students. \nDuring the seminar the students attend two one-hour talks given by professors from MUN on various mathematical topics and applications in science and engineering. There are several problem solving sessions as well as other activities such as Mathletics and Papers Chase. The winner of Blundon Contest is presented with the Blundon Shield\, and the winners of other contests are also presented with money and book prizes. The awards for the best results in mathematics competitions are presented during the banquet\, where a collective photo is taken as well. \nThe first Blundon seminar took place in May 1982. It is named after professor W.J. Blundon who was the first head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at MUN\, and an avid problem solver. This seminar traditionally combines intellectual and fun/sport components. According to students responses collected after each seminar this event is enjoyable\, informative\, and memorable for many of them. It also plays a significant role in the recruitment of the best student for their further studies at MUN. \nMany of former participants continue to show a great success during their graduate studies of mathematics in other universities including University of Toronto\, U of Waterloo\, and UBC. Several of our current faculty members were participants of the seminar in the past.

SUMMARY:University of PEI Math Camp
DESCRIPTION:This Math Camp is an initiative of the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences\, in association with the Canadian Mathematical Society and the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences. The first Math Camp at UPEI took place in 2002\, and has been held annually since then. Math Camp brings to campus a group of top grade 10 and 11 students\, who spend a weekend participating in a variety of math-related activities\, such as group problem solving\, math relays\, math trivia and sessions with faculty. The goals are to give the students an opportunity to broaden their mathematical horizons and to encourage them to continue their math studies at university.
