Mission

The mission of AARMS is to strengthen research and education in the mathematical sciences, with special focus on Atlantic Canada. AARMS fosters scientific collaborations, both within the Atlantic mathematical community, and with colleagues across Canada and beyond. AARMS provides outstanding educational opportunities, in order to build expertise and attract talent to the region. In addition, AARMS supports initiatives that raise interest and competence in mathematics among the public in general, and school children in particular. Through its activities, AARMS aims to promote scholarly excellence, and to maintain a strong and vibrant mathematical research community in Atlantic Canada.

Overview

AARMS was founded in March 1996, and is one of the four regional institutes representing the mathematical community in Canada.  (The others are the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) , the Fields Institute, and the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques (CRM) representing Western Canada, Ontario and Quebec, respectively.)  Since its inception, AARMS has played an important role in research activities in the Atlantic region, sponsoring or co-sponsoring numerous meetings and workshops, collaborative research groups postdoctoral fellowships, mathematical outreach, and an annual summer school for graduate students and promising undergraduates.

AARMS receives funding from its member Universities (listed below), the provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia, and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada via PIMS, CRM and Fields.
