Open quantum systems

February 24, 2020 - March 13, 2020

This course is concerned with the behaviour quantum systems under the influence of external noise. The theory describes generic noise induced features, such as decoherence, entanglement, thermalization. They are of core interest in applications in various branches of science: in quantum information and computation, chemistry, material sciences and even in biology. Basic familiarity with this theory is a good (and necessary) foundation for a more advanced understanding of most modern quantum sciences.

The course will be taught by Marco Merkli (Memorial University) at the African Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Centre of Excellence in Limbe, Cameroon. AARMS support for Atlantic Canadian participation in AIMS graduate courses is an important component of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutes in 2015.
