The AARMS poster for 2017-2018 features “big data” in the form of a visualization of global maritime commercial traffic from Dalhousie University’s Institute for Big Data Analytics. The familiar curves representing the world’s coastlines are not actually drawn in the image, they are rather reproduced by the start and end points of ship trajectories. Understanding how to exploit such datasets efficiently will be a major focus of the new AARMS Collaborative Research Group on “Statistical Learning for Dependent Data”.
